“I CAN NOT BUT DREAM”

21 January

Radio station “Orpheus” jointly with PJSC “Unipro” keeps working on the multimedia project “Russian Composers’ Heritage Revival”. Our today’s concert is aimed at discovering new aspects of the creative heritage of the great conductor Nikolai Golovanov by opening to our listeners the unknown pages of his composing activity in the genres of romance and song.

Most of Golovanov’s best works were composed in his youth when he was not overloaded with the numerous conductor’s responsibilities. A lot of his romances appeared at the period when the Russian empire was going through the last years of its existence.

The specific features of Golovanov’s vocal pieces were their refined melodies and expressive  harmony, the orchestral scale and the symphonic sound of the piano texture, as well as the variety and high quality of lyrics.

Following his creative idea, Golovanov developed an original approach to chamber and vocal lyrical works which was reflected in creating musical cycles from separate pieces.  Sometimes it was a romance collection based on the poems of one poet - for example, the cycle “Intimate” which included 12 romances on Anna Akhmatova’s verses. In other cases the romances were united by the same topic, as it happened in the cycle “The bunch of fragrant flowers”.

In our concert you will hear the romances in accordance with the opus numbers in the ascending order. It will allow the listeners not only to get acquainted with certain pages of Golovanov’s vocal works, but also to understand the composer’s logic.
